Upcycled Wristlet

I’ve been back from Florida for a week and I’ve made a new bag!

This one has a zipper, lining, pockets, and general goodness all around!

This bag wasn’t struggle-less though. I  had made a prototype out of muslin and had written on it to keep track of the sides of the bag. Naturally, the prototype came out fine but when it was time to use real fabric, I made a bag that had one side exterior and the other side lining!

I had to rip out all the seams and sew the front of the bag on properly! A plus is that now I know that my seams are really really strong! Durable bags people. Durable bags.

Here’s me ripping seams out of an old pair of Old Navy Jeans. Woo! Destruction!

Here’s the finished bag:

And detailing of the front… detail!

I’m feeling good about all this crafting fun! Tonight after I rest a little and eat some yummy chili, I’ll work on either another prototype for something new, or I’ll make some similar bags (different lining style). Those will be posted when they’re done!

Tote Bag away!

Tote Bag (06Jun10)

That’s a photo of what I made on Sunday! I fail a bit at math and sewing, but it’s really the first time I’ve gotten the guts to use patterned cloth (100% cotton) on a project. I’m pleased overall.

Also, I’m using Flickr now. And Deviant Art. My bag is all sideways on Deviant Art but it’s good to get started in multiple creative communities!

So expect more. Yes, crafter’s devotional has fallen by the wayside but I’m feeling like I’ll start picking up certain tips (maybe not all of them!) as I continue. Still looking to do beading and jewelry, that hasn’t fallen away from my plans. I need to collect elements first. Collecting in a planned way. Or maybe chaos. Who knows?

Making of Satchel: Prototype

This is part of an overall larger project I’ll be working on with Sal over the next year. We’ve got some great ideas but we need some bag prototypes first. This is one of many.

This is made out of muslin and is part of a pattern I found in this book: Sew & Stow by Betty Oppenheimer. The review of this book is one of many “to-do-lists.”

Anyways, I was opting for a variation on the Hobo Bandana Bundle from Sew & Stow.

Prototype Satchel

To make this prototype, I grabbed two 15″ pieces of white muslin and hemmed the sides in .5″ to make two 14″ squares.

Then I layered the two squares over each other so there were 8 edges and I marked two circles around the squares that would eventually house the drawstring. Finally, I sewed the two circles and pulled through a drawstring. I stuffed the prototype to get an idea of volumetric filling.

I’m proud of my first go at making a bag, I think it went really well. Sure, I’m still learning how to thread the machine so that I don’t swear at it at the top of my lungs whenever I start a new project… and I may have Sal help me with drawing circles next time, but overall I’m really pleased that I sewed fabric together and made something tangible other than a pillow!

There’ll be more to come on this project soon. Also, I’m thinking of a name change for this site since my focus has developed into several crafty interests rather than the one… more on that later unless there’s any suggestions! I’d like to keep the Starfall portion but am willing to change if the name’s good enough.
